How and why did the Meeting organisers make the decision to host a virtual meeting in light of the COVID-19 pandemic?
We have been closely monitoring updates on the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. The health and safety of our ISCoS members, our patients, staff, family and friends is always our top most priority and this is particularly pertinent in our field of SCI and related disciplines which the Annual ISCoS Meeting brings together. Many of us are on the frontline of supporting the most vulnerable in society. Given the confirmation that the Olympics and Paralympics will be postponed until 2021 and to support the authorities of the World in their effort to slow the spread of the virus, the ISCoS Executive and Board have decided to cancel in-person attendance and face-to-face activities at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Yokohama.
Why aren’t we holding an in-person meeting at a later day?
We are committed to ensuring that the spinal cord injury community have the possibility to continue education, research as well as sharing scientific news and best practice. The trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic is still unknown and it remains unclear when it will be safe, permissible and logistically possible to hold an international conference of this size.
Will ISCoS 2020: VIRTUAL take place during the same week as originally planned?
Yes, ISCoS 2020: VIRTUAL will take place during the same week as originally planned, 1-5 September 2020.
What can a delegate expect from the new virtual conference format?
ISCoS 2020: VIRTUAL will provide delegates with the possibility to continue education, research as well as sharing scientific news and best practice together without the need to leave home. It will be a compelling combination of virtual sessions and community networking, including exhibitions, workshops, instructional courses and symposium, that will reach audiences around the world.
Will the plenary speakers and themes be the same as previously announced?
Yes, you can expect the same plenary speakers and themes as announced.
Will I need special computer equipment, high-speed internet, software or training to participate in the virtual conference?
You will not need special technologies or equipment to participate in ISCoS 2020: VIRTUAL. Our priority remains that the content of the conference is accessible around the world. Generally speaking, if you are able to watch videos on Facebook or Youtube from your device, then your internet speed is sufficient enough.
Presenters will be offered the opportunity to join free webinars on how to record and present virtually and we will provide assistance and other information in advance of the event.
